Eyes on the Ball

What can the FIFA World Cup teach us about managing debt? Learn why taking control of your finances and having a strategy is the key to becoming debt-free.

On June 11, the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicked off in Mexico City. This is the largest edition in history for the men’s soccer event; and, is co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Team U.S.A is doing a remarkable campaign, with a “play to win” mindset. The USA team clearly research their adversaries and play strategically, adjusting their tactics depending on whom they are facing. Mistakes are avoided at all costs by having eyes particularly on the ball.

Yet, when it comes to our personal finances, we often neglect to monitor our debts and get the ball rolling while actively pursuing a strategy to become ourselves debt-free. Making matters worse, we may coach ourselves that all will be well, despite deliberately not practicing or searching for resources. In any match, this would earn a red card.

So, why do we play against our best financial interests? There is a myriad of explanations. Economics and psychology theories explain that we often are overly optimistic about the future and, more specifically, about our capacity to save more in the future. In addition, economic assumptions posit that human beings are reluctant to change (status quo bias). Consequently, not only do we compete against ourselves when it comes to taking action to get out of debt in the present but also this type of behavior is difficult to change.

Ultimately, we need to take charge of our finances and be the strongest players on our own team by keeping our eyes on the ball. Taking control and educating yourself about debts will be a game changer.
